During our exploration of the KaiOS Store, we discovered an unexpected deficiency: there were very few apps for basic phone users that addressed health and wellness. The concept for Blinkare originated there.
People in underserved areas—where smartphones are uncommon, healthcare access is restricted, and daily wages are frequently less than $1—are the target audience for the health app Blinkare. Imagine a Burundian Alex. He speaks only his native tongue, has a basic keypad phone, and wants to monitor his health, stay active, and track his mood. However, these kinds of apps are typically unavailable because they are either too costly or too complex.
Therefore, we designed Blinkare to be easy to use, compatible with local languages, and totally free. You don't need a fancy phone. It makes wellness accessible to everyone, regardless of where they live or their income level, and is powered by KaiOS, the operating system found in many low-cost feature phones.
Modern technology powers Blinkare behind the scenes, with Node.js, Twilio, and Infobip powering the backend and ReactJS and Tailwind CSS powering the frontend. Indeed, we made use of programs like Framer Motion, Yup, and Formik to ensure that the app is responsive, fluid, and easy to use.
